We introduce a new, unique filament to our constantly expanding range of products – PLA Rainbow Silk from ROSA 3D. Produced from start to finish in our own factory. It was developed by people for whom the quality of the final product is the number one priority.

Each spool of Rainbow Silk PLA is unique. The starting colour is different for each spool. Additionally, individual batches of the product may have different lengths of colour transitions. This means that every print created with this rainbow material is one of a kind.

PLA Rainbow Silk filament colour variants

PLA Rainbow Silk filament from ROSA 3D has a unique, eye-catching colour scheme. The colours in the gradient have been chosen to create a beautiful tonal transition. The gradient forming this filament consists of 7 colours in the following order: gold, green, turquoise, blue, violet, pink and orange. An equally important feature of this filament is its silky gloss. It makes the print surface look exceptionally delicate and elegant. Visual properties are a result of the unique combination of ingredients used in the production process.

Physical properties

PLA Rainbow Silk is a polylactide based filament enriched with a unique blend of materials. Printing with this material is a pleasure. It does not require a chamber or high temperatures of the extruder. Therefore, it can be successfully used even in the simplest 3D printers. An additional advantage of this filament is the lack of unpleasant smell. The resulting prints are characterised by very good interlayer adhesion. This means that they are durable and do not break easily. The ease of printing with PLA Rainbow Silk allows to obtain exceptionally detailed models.

How to control colours in a print made with Rainbow Silk PLA?

Multicoloured filament is a great solution if you want to make the 3d printed objects more vivid.  Its great advantage is the ease with which you can create interesting, multicoloured prints. There is no need to tediously change the filament during printing. Printer with multiple extruders is also not required.

You can control the number of colour transitions and the height of the colour layer. How? All you need to do is choose the right printing parameters in the slicer. Full colour transition (all colours) occurs about every 240 grams of the filament. Increasing the density of infill, increases the weight of finished print. The result is a greater number of colour transitions.

What are the nozzle temperature and print speed for PLA Rainbow Silk?

Rainbow Silk PLA printing parameters aren’t any different from the typical settings used for PLA filaments. It is recommended to use temperatures between 200-225°C. You can get a glossier surface of the finished print by increasing the extrusion temperature. Speaking of extrusion, don’t forget the print speeds. A higher printing speed requires a higher extrusion temperature. The optimal printing speed for PLA Rainbow Silk is 60-80 mm/s.

What nozzle to use for PLA Rainbow Silk?

To print with PLA Rainbow Silk, you can use a variety of nozzles. You can choose from sizes from 0,2 mm to 1 mm. A standard brass nozzle is good enough but you can use a hardened steel one, if you like. A specific heatbreak is also not required. Both full-metal and one with Teflon (PTFE) tube will work well.

Please note that the optimal printing temperature depends on the nozzle and heatbreak material.

PLA Rainbow Silk filament is suitable for use in both direct drive and bowden feeding. It is worth to have in mind the angle at which the filament is fed to the hotend. Too sharp angle combined with rapid head movements may result in a broken thread.

Heated chamber is not required to obtain very good results. Although, its use will have a beneficial effect on the interlayer adhesion in the finished print.

Prints illuminated by sunlight. Strong light allows the colours to gain a remarkable intensity.

Which bed sufaces are compatible with PLA Rainbow Silk?

The filament is suitable for printing on various surface types. Glass, PC sheet, PEI board as well as aluminum sheet can be used. The material does not require a heated bed.  However, a heated bed increases the adhesion of the print to the surface. To get the best results it is worth to increase the adhesion of the print to the surface. For this purpose, a thin layer of an adhesive preparation should be applied to the surface. In the case of PEI board, the adhesive can also help to tear off the finished printout without damaging the surface. For complex printouts, the adhesion can be improved by using painter’s tape or glue stick.
